My top 5 kitchen gadgets

I’m a gadget person but my favorite place to have gadgets are in the kitchen. Gadgets just make life easier. And since I love cooking, my favorite gadgets tend to be in the kitchen. There are my top non electrical 5 gadgets that just make my cooking life easier and/or fun.
My zoodle maker! That’s what I love to make zucchini noodles with it. It’s really called a spiral cutter. I’ve also done carrot noodles, parsnip noodles and squash noodles too. There are lots of cheaper ones, but this one is sturdy and I’ve owned mine for 2 years. If you think you’ll love veggie noodles, then I recommend this one because it is more versatile because it will allow you to do bigger things like butternut squash or apples.

My Lemon Juice Squeezer! I use a LOT of lemons. I love to drink fresh lemon juice in my water, cook with lemon juice and more. I use it EVERYDAY!

My bacon grease saver! Do I need to say more? I love cooking with bacon grease and I love making homemade bacon mayo! Since I buy pastured bacon, the fat from pastured pork is high in oleic acid which is the prized element in olive oil. Hello bacon! Stay tuned for my bacon chipotle mayo recipe.

My salad dressing bottle! This handy dandy little thing has 8 recipes on the bottle. You fill it up according to the line on the bottle and it makes beautiful salad dressing every time! No more store bought GMO, HFCS filled salad dressing! This makes homemade dressing so easy!

My garlic press! We go through A LOT of garlic in our house, approximately 2-3 full bulbs per week. I don’t think it’s possible to ever have too much garlic! You don’t even have to peel the garlic before putting it in the press! This handy tool minces garlic with one press and it has a cleaning mechanism that pushes out the leftover peel.

I have many more favorite kitchen gadgets but I’ll leave it at the top 5.

The Home Birth of Norah Hope

41 weeks 1 day pregnant--The time had come finally and thank the Lord because this ole body was ready. I had an appointment with my midwife, Michelle Ray on Monday, April 29th at 10am. Last week, the baby's hand (and possibly the cord) was above her head so Michelle used the ultrasound to check her out. Praise the Lord! Her hand was not above her head. They were at her mouth and pretty sure she was sucking one of her thumbs and/or fingers. I kinda melted... Knowing there was no obstruction, after dinner on Monday, I pulled out the moxibustion sticks from the last birth and lit them up and placed them on the induction pressure points . After all, I had been having crazy contractions for over 2 weeks. The kids surrounded me with indelible curiosity about the moxibustion. Immediately, the baby began moving a lot and contractions started. I continued pressing the pressure points through out the evening before bed and turned in early around 930pm. I woke up at 3am because of...

Labor Part 2--Lana's Birth Story

After 36 hours of early labor and the nesting done, we laid down for another nap around 4pm. I woke up earlier than Chris and then finally woke him up around 6:30pm because Dr. Yoon was coming back by to check on me. She did some more acupuncture and as she was leaving, my water broke around 7-7:30pm. We called Michelle, our midwife, back and she was on her way over. Making it through each contraction was priority #1 as the intensity rose significantly after the water broke. Lana had engaged down and it was so painful to lay down so I paced the house and as each contraction came, new coping skills had to be developed so we tried a lot of things. I sat on the exercise ball, I leaned on it on top of the bed, I got in the shower many times and let the hot water fall on my lower back, and I leaned on Chris. I really enjoyed getting in the shower. My friend, Andy arrived around 8pm to bring me an oreo milkshake which I was not in the mood for any longer (although it would come in ha...

God of This City

One year ago, I was sitting in Riverbluff, my home church for over 28 of my 32 years, when I saw it for the first time. It was a video of images of Charleston, my beloved home, to the tune of "God of This City." We had just found out we were moving. I just about balled my eyes out watching the images of Charleston knowing I was leaving the only place I had ever known as home--my family, friends, church, career and more. What a ride we have been on since then! Last week at our new church, they sung the song and it made me think about what God has done in the last year and how much he has blessed us in the move. First, He completely orchestrated the move selling our house in just 7 days. Then he's blessed us with some amazing people to come into our lives and now we have Lana. At first, hearing the song again brought tears to my eyes as I thought about leaving Charleston and seeing those images flash in my mind. But then, the tears turned to gratefulness for what Go...
